Pandas vermelhos ganham centro no Himalaia

O Estado de Sikkim, na Índia, tenta salvar o urso panda vermelho, uma das espécies mais raras do planeta, da extinção com um programa de reprodução em cativeiro.

O programa administrado pelo departamento estadual de florestas acontece em um parque especialmente construído na cidade de Gangtok, no Himalaia.

De acordo com representantes do Parque Zoológico do Himalaia, o programa ainda está num estágio inicial, mas o objetivo é criar um centro de criação de pandas vermelhos.

Atualmente o local abriga seis animais: duas fêmeas e quatro machos.
Há seis meses, nasceu no zoológico um panda vermelho que foi identificado como macho.

Além do programa de reprodução de pandas, o governo estadual de Sikkim também pretende iniciar um para leopardos da neve e outras espécies, para as quais já foram identificados locais ideiais para a construção de centros.

Kubuntu 7.04

De fato, aguardar o Kubuntu 7.04 foi bom. Eu usei o computador sem grandes problemas por meses. Muitas vezes utilizei com uma das melhores funcionalidades que eu vejo no Linux que é utilizar o computador por muitos dias sem a necessidade de desligá-lo, apenas efetuando o "logon" e "logoff". Isto é especialmente bom em um micro antigo como o meu (um Pentium III 650), pois não há a necessidade de aguardar o período de carga do sistema operacional, e o consumo de energia em "logoff" é pequeno.

Actually, waiting for the version 7.04 of Kubuntu was good. I have used the computer with no big problems for months. Many times I have used it with one of the greatest functionalities which I see in Linux that is to use the computer for many days without turn it off, just logging on and login off. That is especially good with an old computer like mine (a Pentium III 650), because this no need of waiting the time of boot from operational system, and the power's consumption is soft while logging off is little.

Kubuntu 6.10 - Problemas

Eu fui muito rápido para fazer certas experimentações com o Kubuntu. Querendo ver os repositórios de software de pacotes Debian, resolvi acrescentar alguns repositórios instáveis para explorar. De fato, resolvi instalar alguns softwares destes repositórios (nem me lembro mais, quais), e o gerenciador do KDE começou a dar pau cada vez que era acionado.

Consultei alguns colegas para ver o que poderia ser feito desde que não fosse feita a reinstalação do Kubuntu. Me recomendaram instalar novamente, mas aguardar a versão 7.04 que deveria sair em breve na época. Aguardei.

I was too fast to experiment some things on Kubuntu. I wanted to see some Debian package repositories, so I decided to add some unstable repositories to explore. Indeed, I decided to install some softwares from these repositories (I cannot remember which), and the KDE System Management started to crash every time it was initialized.
I ask advice from some colleagues to see what could be done except to reinstall Kubuntu. They recommended me to install the system again, but just after the release of version 7.04 that should be released soon that time. I waited.

A Faculdade Anglicana de Erechim(FAE) juntamente com o grupo TcheLinux estarão realizando o 1º Seminário de Software Livre TcheLinux em Erechim. O seminário dá continuidade a um longo calendário de eventos que o grupo está realizando em várias cidades do Rio Grande do Sul durante o ano de 2007. O intuito é apresentar e divulgar para estudantes, e demais interessados, o Software Livre, através de debates, palestras e demonstrações práticas, desmistificando-o.
O Evento será realizado no dia 23 de Junho(Sábado) nas dependências da FAE na Av. Sete de Setembro nº 44 no Centro. Aqui você pode ver um mapa com a localização da FAE em Erechim.

A programação do evento pode ser acessada aqui.

As inscrições poderão ser feitas do dia 21/05 até o dia 22/06 de segunda a sexta no horário das 8:00 às 22:30 e sábados das 8:00 às 11:30 nas dependências da FAE, podendo ser encerradas antes caso as 500 vagas disponíveis sejam preenchidas.

Não será cobrado um valor em dinheiro como taxa de inscrição para o evento, ao invés disso, cada participante deverá doar 2 quilos de alimentos não perecíveis que será encaminhados a uma instituição de caridade de Erechim. A entrega da doação deverá ser feita no momento da inscrição.

Kubuntu 6.10

Já que eu teria que fazer uma nova instalação, resolvi experimentar o Kubuntu 6.10 , uma variação do Ubuntu, com interface KDE. Naquele momento era a versão mais recente do Kubuntu / Ubuntu. O lema do Ubuntu é "Linux para seres humanos".

Foi possível rodar o Kubuntu pelo "live CD". Tem uma bela interface. E o próprio live cd reconheceu o roteador para acesso à Internet. A princípio todas as funcionalidades requeridas estavam lá.

Nunca estamos satisfeitos com o que temos. Pelo menos, eu, parece que nunca estou satisfeito com o que tenho.

Depois de migrar para a versão 7 do Kurumin, até o Picasa Linux passou a funcionar.

Mas então... Já que o Kurumin vem com o ambiente gráfico KDE instalado, mas há "ícones mágicos" para instalação do ambiente gráfico Gnome e do XFCE, por que não instalá-los também, e passar a desfrutar de mais versatilidade em matéria de ambientes? Usei os ícones mágicos para instalar. E a instalação teve problemas. Mandei reiniciar o ambiente gráfico (teclas "control" + "alt" + "back space") para verificar se as novas opções de ambiente gráfico estavam disponíveis. O ambiente gráfico não reiniciou.

Tentei a reinstalação pelo "live cd", sem destruição de dados. A instalação reconfigurou o ambiente gráfico KDE, sem os outros ambientes, mas a conexão à Internet não funcionava.

Para tentar corrigir a conexão à Internet, tentei uma instalação "downgrade" para o Kurumin 6, para ver se funcionava. Não funcionou. Eu teria que fazer um reinstalação com formatação do disco rígido e perda de dados.

After migrating to version 7 of Kurumin Linux, even the Picasa Linux has started to work.
But then... Once the Kurumin Linux comes with KDE graphical environment installed, but there are "magical icons" to installation of Gnome graphical environment and XFCE graphical environment, why not install them too, and enjoying more versatility on environments? I clicked on "magical icons" to install. And the installation had problems. I tried to restart the graphical environment (keys "control" + "alt" + "back space") to verify whether the new options of graphical environments were available. The graphical environment did not restart.
I tried the reinstallation by live cd, with no data destruction. The installation restored the KDE graphical environment, and not the others, but Internet connection did not work.
Trying to correct the Internet connection, I tried a "downgrade" installation to Kurumin Linux 6. It did not work. I would have to make a reinstallation formatting the hard disk, and data lost.

O Linux Salva o Linux

Após o desastre relatado no "post" anterior, e, aconselhado, resolvi migrar para a versão 7 do Kurumin Linux. Descobri então que era possível uma instalação, assim, restauradora do Kurumin. Depois de rodar o "live CD", e solicitar a instalação, ele me perguntou se eu queria formatar a área própria para a instalação do Linux ou não. Respondi que não, e foi feita uma instalação mantendo os usuários existentes, e reparando os arquivos do sistema, da versão 6 para a 7. Assim o Linux foi restaurado.

E, curiosamente, o Picasa Linux passou a funcionar com a versão 7 do Kurumin Linux.

After the disaster reported on previous post, and, by advice, I have solved migrate to version 7 of Kurumin Linux. Then, I found out that was possible a, humm, repairer installation of Kurumin. After starting the "live cd", and ask for the installation, it asked me whether I would like to format the proper area to the Linux installation or not. I have answered not, and was made a installation keeping the existing users, and repairing the system files, from version 6 to 7. So, the Linux was restored.
And, curiously, the Picasa Linux has come to work with this version 7 of the Kurumin Linux.

Uma Piada: O Picasa Desconfigurou o Kurumin

Eu gosto muito do Picasa, um software de indexação de imagens, que possui algumas ferramentas básicas para retoque fotográfico. Eu o uso bastante no Windows. Logo após sua instalação, e início, ele começa a perscrutar o disco rígido do computador, procurando imagens, e demora algum tempo neste processo. Após isto, todas as imagens do disco rígido ficam indexadas, e podem ser encontradas com facilidade.

E felizmente, o pessoal do Google gerou uma versão do Picasa para Linux. Como eu gosto do Picasa para Windows, tentei usar também a versão para Linux. Segui os passos indicados para instalação, e o software foi instalado. Porém, ao iniciar o Picasa, o Kurumin Linux congelou. De fato, foi a primeira vez que o ambiente gráfico KDE congelou desde que passei a usar Linux. Mas cada vez que eu tentasse utilizar o Picasa para Linux, o desktop voltaria a congelar.

Conversando com colegas, um deles me mostrou as funcionalidades dos "Ícones Mágicos" para instalação de software no Kurumin. Na versão 7 do Kurumin, o Picasa estava lá, disponível para instalação. No meu caso, o meu computador tinha a versão 6 do Kurumin Linux instalado. Eu teria que averiguar. Quando pude conferir, o Picasa não estava disponível nos Ícones Mágicos, mas era possível atualizar os Ícones Mágicos, com o "Kokar", que é um complemento para instalar novos programas no Kurumin. Atualizados os Ícones Mágicos, o Picasa se tornou disponível. Os passos seguintes foram desinstalar o Picasa via Synaptic, e instalá-lo novamente via Ícones Mágicos.

No meio da instalação, ela congelou. E após reiniciar o Kurumin Linux, o ambiente gráfico não mais carregou. O Linux estava corrompido...

Happily, folks of Google has created a version of Picasa for Linux. As I like Picasa for Windows, I have tried to use the version for Linux too. I have followed the steps to installation, and the software has been installed. However, at the moment Picasa started, Kurumin Linux froze. Indeed, that was the first time that graphical environment KDE has froze since I started to use Linux. But every time I tried to use Picasa, the desktop would turn froze.
Speaking with colleagues, one of them show the functionality of "Magical Icons" to install software on Kurumin. In version 7 of Kurumin, Picasa was there, available to install. About me, my computer had the version 6 of Kurumin Linux installed. I would have to verify. When I could to confer, Picasa was not available at Magical Icons, but it was possible to upgrade the Magical Icons with "Kokar", which is a complement to install new software on Kurumin. Upgraded the Magical Icons, Picasa has became available. Next steps were uninstall Picasa by Synaptic, and install it again, by Magical Icons.
In the middle of installation, it froze. After restart Kurumin Linux, the graphical environment no more loaded. Linux was corrupted...

Problemas com o DVD Player

O principal tocador de mídia ("media player") do Kurumin é o Kaffeine. Pois eu comprei um disco autêntico contendo o filme chinês "Herói", e o Kaffeine disse que o sistema de encriptação do disco não permitia que o mesmo fosse visto pelo tocador de mídia. Seria necessário instalar uma biblioteca que poderia tornar o sistema ilegal, dependendo da legislação do país. O que isto significava?

Procurando nos diversos fóruns da Internet, cheguei a um que informava que para assistir disco encriptados era necessária a biblioteca "libdvdcss" instalada no sistema. Felizmente esta biblioteca estava disponível para instalação via Sinaptic. Foi simples instalar. Com a biblioteca instalada o filme rodou sem problemas. Mas é algo muito estranho isto, de você comprar um filme em DVD original, e o sistema de encriptação do disco tentar impedir que o filme seja visto em sistemas Linux.

Correção.
O Patrick vem informar que o sistema Synaptic (e não "Sinaptic", como vinha sendo erradamente escrito aqui) foi desenvolvido pela Conectiva, uma distribuição Linux que existia no Brasil, e que foi incorporada pela distribuição francesa Mandrake (momento em que a distribuição passou a se chamar Mandriva).
Como já foi dito, o Synaptic é um sistema para instalaçãoe desinstalação de programas em distribuições Linux. Ele foi criado pela Conectiva, e rapidamente adotado pela distribuição Debian. A distribuição Ubuntu, que é derivada da Debian, utiliza o Synaptic como método de instalação. Daí a confusão do blog.

Patrick comes to inform that the Synaptic System ( not "Sinaptic", as it used to be wrongly written here) was developed by Conectiva, a former Linux distribution from Brazil, e that was incorporated by French Madrake Linux distribution (moment in which this distribution has named Mandriva).
As already said, the Synaptic is a system to install and uninstall software on Linux distributions. It was created by Conectiva, and fast adopted by the Debian distribution. The Ubuntu distribution, which is derived from Debian, uses the Synaptic as installation method. So the confusion on this blog.

Atualizando o Firefox

O Sinaptic é um mecanismo para atualizar software que, se não me engano, foi desenvolvido para a distribuição Ubuntu. Ele está sendo usado pela distribuição Kurumin.
Eu utilizei o Sinaptic para atualizar o navegador Firefox duas vezes, com alguns meses de intervalo. E nas duas vezes tive uma surpresa. Eu utilizo a versão para português brasileiro do Firefox, mas após a atualização o Firefox passou a funcionar na versão em inglês. Em ambas, consultei alguns colegas, e, em ambas, me responderam que era necessário instalar o pacote de linguagem para português do Brasil. E em ambas as vezes o pacote de linguagem não pôde ser instalado pelo Sinaptic. Foi necessário abrir uma janela de console e utilizar o "apt-get".

Sinaptic is a device to upgrade software which, if I am no wrong, was developed to Ubuntu distribution of Linux. It is used by Kurumin distribution.
I have used the Sinaptic to upgrade the browser Firefox 2 times, with months of interval. At the 2 times I have had a surprise. I use the version of Firefox to Brazilian Portuguese, but after the upgrading Firefox started to work in the English version. In both cases, I have asked coleagues for counsel, and, in both cases they said me that I needed to install the Brazilian Portuguese language pack. And, in both cases the language pack could not be installed by the Sinaptic. It was necessary to open a command line and using the "apt-get".

O K3B Não Funciona!

O primeiro contratempo que encontrei quando comecei a usar o Linux como principal sistema operacional foi que o K3B, o software gravador de CD e DVD, não funcionava. Parece que havia uma mensagem de erro dizendo que o "CD Record" não havia sido encontrado.
Conversei com alguns colegas, e chegamos à conclusão que por alguma falha, este software, o CD Record estava faltando na distribuição, e, portanto, o K3B não funcionava. Logo era impossível gravar CD's, o meu principal meio de becapi.
Conforme os meus colegas, a solução era utilizar ao "apt-get" para instalar o CD Record.
Então foi isto:
#apt-get update
#apt-get install cdrecord

E o K3B passou a funcionar!

The first mishap that I have had once a started to use Linux as main operating system was that K3B, software that burns CD's and DVD's, did not work. It seems that there was an error message saying "CD Record not found".
I spoke with coleagues, and we found out that, for any reason, this software, the CD Record was missing at the Linux distribution, and, therefore, the K3B did not work. So it was impossible to burn CD's, my main back-up system.
According with my coleagues, the solution was to use "apt-get" to install the CD Record.
So that was:
#apt-get update
#apt-get install cdrecord

And the K3B started to work!

Kalango Linux

A minha segunda tentativa de linux foi com o Kalango (http://www.kalangolinux.org/), uma distribuição derivada do Kurumin, que por sua vez foi derivado do Knoppix, que por sua vez foi derivado do Debian. Foi com um "live cd", na versão 2.0 do Kalango. O Kalango tinha uma interface um pouco mais bonita que o Kurumin, e havia sido por isso que eu a escolhi.
Infelizmente eu não consegui fazer funcionar algumas coisas, e nem estava maduro o suficiente para corrigir os problemas...
Acabei indo para o Kurumin.
Nesse meio tempo o computador já era outro, um Compaq Pentium III de 650 Mhz.

The second trying of using Linux was with Kalango (http://www.kalangolinux.org/), a distribution derived from Kurumin, which was derived from Knoppix, which was derived from Debian. It was with a live cd, version 2.0 of Kalango. The Kalango had an interface a bit more beautiful than Kurumin, and that was why I choose that.
Unfortunately, I could not make some things work, and I was not prepared to correct the problems...
At last, I choose Kurumin.
Meanwhile, o computer was other, a Compaq Pentium III with 650 Mhz.

Primeira Tentativa

A primeira tentativa que fiz de utilizar uma distribuição Linux foi com o Peanut Linux, não me lembro se versão 7 ou 8. A vantagem dela é que era possível instalar como uma aplicação do Windows. Assim era possível experimentar sem ter que formatar a máquina. Foi neste mesmo Pentium 75 citado abaixo. Quando o Linux era iniciado ele "derrubava" o Windows. Antes dos "live cd's", esta era uma solução, distribuições Linux que se instalavam como aplicações Windows. Meu problema foi que não consegui fazer funcionar minha placa fax-modem Genius GM331.
Olhando na Internet, vi que esta distribuição, Peanut Linux, agora se chama "ALinux" (http://alinux.org).

Não me lembro quando ouvi falar em Linux pela primeira vez. Mas me lembro que uma vez me chamou a atenção uma caixinha de Conectiva Linux 3.0 Guarani, numa vitrine da loja da livraria Siciliano da Rua da Praia. Depois vi mais em revistas.

Comecei na área de tecnologia porque precisava de um emprego melhor. Havia um concurso para uma vaga. Passei. Quem acredita em acaso, diria que é puro acaso. Eu acredito em Graça Divina. Assim o meu emprego na área de tecnologia é fruto da misericórdia divina em minha vida.
I have began in the technological area because I needed a better job. There was a contest. I won. That one who believes in chance, would say that that is it. I believe in Divine Grace. So, my job is at technological area is fruit of Divine Misericordy in my life.
